about

“Soothing and beautiful, with an unnerving ambience that give it an edge, so go soak yourself in it.” **** NZ Herald

Skallander is the earthy name for the aetheric collaboration between Matthew Mitchell (ex-Wellington jazz scene, lately Hungarian media mogul) and Bevan Smith (of Aspen, Signer, Marineville fame). Recorded and produced across a series of P2P systems “the Camels” appears; burnished like old copper, buffed like sea swept glass.

As tracks and ideas are shuttled back and forth across the new silk road that is P2P, Smith and Mitchell find themselves cracking open genres, slipping across styles, falling off the road, riding the verge. “Is prog-indie cool?”, “Dub-guitar pop?” ideas and experiments met, spun around, driven ‘till the tyres blow out.

Mitchell’s feel for the surreal, surfaces here and there among the sandpapered vocals. Finely grained as shifting sands they play off against apple crisp clicks and beats. Smith continues to perfect his smooth 80’s style production, coming ever closer to a pomegranate rich ideal.

Moving away from the liminal, half twilight realms of uninspired electronic slash anythings, “The Camels” sounds open, light and crisp. Skallander’s vistas are open to the horizon, the air dry and rough, the way the camels like it.
